The Kitchen

This is Grandma Mable. We try not to eat too
much of her cooking... you never know what might bite back,
but here are a few of her favorites for Halloween parties
and/or trick-or-treaters.
Halloween Goodies

Rice Krispie
Eyeballs
This is one of Grandma Mable's favorites.
It's fun and easy. Just make rice krispie treats and when
they are ready to cool, form them into balls. Then, take an
M-n-M and press it into the ball. You can then use black icing
or gel and make a pupil in the center of the M-n-M and red
icing or gel around the M-n-M in squiggly (is that a word?)
lines outward to make a bloodshot affect. How's that for easy?
Devilled Eyes
This one was actually done for our wedding.
Make devilled eggs however you like them, but save out a little
of the yolk mixture with egg and mayonnaise only. Then, take
some green olives with pimentos and push them into the yolk
mixture in the egg-half (you can cut the olives into slices
if you don't care that much for olives). Add some red food
coloring to the remaining yolk mixture, put into an icing
triangle, and using a medium size tip, squeeze out the red
yolk outwards from the olive for a bloodshot affect. They
look really good!
Fresh Apple
Cake
Have you ever wondered what to do with those
left over apples from the apple bob? Give this Fresh Apple
Cake a try for a change of pace.
Mix together:
2 cups of sugar
1 1/2 cups cooking oil
2 eggs
2 tsp. vanilla
Add: 3 cups diced apples
Combine: 3 cups all purpose flour with
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
Mix all ingredients well, should be stiff.
Add 1 cup nuts. Bake at 350 degrees for about 30-40 minutes.
While cake is still warm, ice with powered sugar icing with
a little brown sugar mixed in, making a light glaze.
More ideas to come... I'm
going through Mable's cookbook right now and it's quite a
mess!
Halloween Party Ideas

This is Grandpa. Can you see the family resemblance
between him and Shroud? Grandpa is our party organizer. He
looks like a fun guy don't you think?
Ghost Toss
Fun party games for the kiddies! Take some
little bean bags, or make your own, and put them in white
socks (or a cut up white sheet if you like). Decorate the
socks to look like ghosts... ie. black eyes and an oval shaped
mouth and tie them off at the bottom with rubber bands. Paint
or draw a haunted house on a large piece of cardboard with
a hole where the attic window would be (or the front door
or where ever you would like) and you have a ghost toss game.
Give out prizes to children who make it in the hole for extra
fun.
More party ideas to come... Grandpa is even
less organized than his wife, Grandma Mable.
